Greencranes Successful Trials Open Way for Port Sustainability

Greencranes – Green Technologies and Eco-Efficient Alternatives for Cranes and Operations at Port Container Terminals – a project co-financed by the European Union under the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) program, organized a public demonstration of the pilot tests earlier this month on the premises of the APV and Noatum Container Terminal Valencia. The results of two pilot tests were presented, including a terminal tractor powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
During the public demonstration the audience could see live performance of the two tractors specially developed by terminal tractor manufacturers Alfaland (Spain) and Terberg (Netherlands) for the Greencranes project: one powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and the other by diesel, both meeting Stage IV standard of emission control.
LNG was supplied to the terminal by Gas Natural Fenosa. The energy company also installed a mobile supply station, developed by HAM, from which Noatum technicians have refueled using a process that while different to diesel refueling, is fast, easy and secure.
The LNG terminal tractor features a Cummins Westport ISK GeEV 250 8.9 litre engine and a 319 litre LNG fuel tank. Refueling takes 5 minutes.
During this pilot, which began last October, the two units have undergone 700 hours of work in the real conditions of a port terminal, operating almost continuously for over a month. Compared to a traditional tractor, both vehicles demonstrated improvement over traditional vehicles in the field of sound and emissions.
Given these results, Noatum is starting to work with tractor manufacturers to develop hybrid vehicles using LNG and electricity and energy accumulators to reach optimum sustainability.
GREENCRANES is a ‘public’ project that seeks to analyze the different eco-efficient technological alternatives to reduce greenhouse gases and particulate pollutants in ports without compromising productivity or profitability. The consortium comprises Valenciaport (project coordinator), the Port Authority of Valencia, Noatum, Konecranes Spain, ABB Spain, Port of Koper (Slovenia) and the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport Foundation.
