Bolivia’s National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) reported that El Alto, the second largest city in the department of La Paz, converted more vehicles to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) than any other city in the country during 2013 and January this year. 15,157 public and private vehicles underwent conversion from petrol to CNG under the auspices of the government’s policy of changing the national energy matrix, allowing further reduction in the consumption of liquid fuels and harnessing Bolivia’s own natural gas.
Cochabamba was second with 13,404 conversions, followed by Tarija with 7,268. To date, the national registry records approximately 230 thousand vehicles converted to CNG in the country.
There are 268 conversion workshops approved by the ANH for this work, 74 of which are licensed for operations in El Alto. Likewise, the ANH issued 23 licenses to CNG stations in the city.
