Parker Hannifin Corporation, provider of motion and control technologies, has introduced an advanced CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) Vehicle Gas Regulator System for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. The regulator system offers stable, reduced pressure delivery and control of natural gas throughout the full range of extreme engine and environmental operating conditions. Integrated internal regulator components work together to: eliminate fuel line failures due to freezing; dampen flow-induced vibration; reduce drop at high flow; and extend cycle life.

The gas regulator system was premiered by Parker’s Veriflo Division at the co-located NGV Global 2014 and 2014 Alternative Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo. Available in either a machined or cast body, the gas regulator system offers more configuration options than comparable products.
The addition of the environmentally friendly natural gas regulator system positions Parker as the industry’s only provider of an integrated natural gas on-board fuel management module for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, including delivery and day cab trucks, cement trucks, school and transit buses, and waste refuse/recycling vehicles, among others.
Parker’s new gas regulator system consists of an integrated filter, inlet solenoid valve, and heat exchanger, all working together to provide advanced fuel handling performance. Optimized for 6- to 15-liter engines, Veriflo’s piston regulator design offers stable pressure delivery and control of CNG throughout the full range of engine and environmental operating conditions. The manifold design of the regulator system reduces the chance of fuel line pressure increase due to reduced volume of fuel between the solenoid valve and regulator seals.
The regulator system is designed to achieve the highest flow rates (165 lb/hr) in the industry and the lowest low-pressure operating parameter (225 psig), Parker claims, which increases the usable range of CNG vehicles by 10 to 15 percent.
Other key features and advantages include: an integrated heat exchanger that uses heated radiator fluid to condition the gas before it enters the engine, offering improved reliability at low temperatures and eliminating fuel line failures due to freezing; well-dampened piston that reduces flow-induced vibration; reduced pressure drop at high flow (75 kg/hr CNG); constrained motion poppet design eliminates lateral loads and seat wear; thermal shielding of internal components with PTFE seals isolates gas flow, allowing continuous operation even in extreme temperatures and ambients; sealed dome provides for captured vent and boost pressure biasing; and a compact size, offering maximum effectiveness in a small space. Configuration options include a low-pressure relief valve, high- and low-pressure sensors, inlet solenoid valve, and coalescing filter. The complete system meets or exceeds all industry specifications.
According to Tamara Horne, General Manager of Parker’s Veriflo Division, “Parker’s new CNG Vehicle Gas Regulator System furthers our company’s commitment to providing leading-edge technologies designed to reduce the world’s dependence on oil-based fuels. Our expanded line of Parker CNG components, systems, and solutions for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles gives customers the choice to partner with the industry’s only single-source supplier for alternative fuel systems.”
