In a first-of-its-kind initiative for the region, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Emirates Steel Industries (Emek) to convert heavy vehicles like forklifts and cranes at construction sites to use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and the installation of CNG filling stations for private vehicles.
The agreement was signed by Chairman, SEWA, Dr Rashid Al Leem and Deputy CEO of Emek, Engineer Omar Jawdat.
The project aims to provide alternative sources of energy for the operation of heavy machines like cranes through CNG filling stations at work sites that will be supplied from the local gas grid. The grid covers most of the industrial and commercial areas in the emirate.
The SEWA project is in accordance with the vision and directives of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The emirate aims to benefit from cutting-edge technology to ensure preservation of the environment and sustainable development. Nearly 60 per cent of urban pollution comes from the use of gasoline and diesel in cars and vehicles.
During the next phase of the project, forklifts and mechanical vehicles in medium to large warehouses in the industrial and commercial areas and free zones in Sharjah are to be converted to CNG operation, with at least twenty site conversions in the first year.
