Gas Natural Fenosa and Spain’s Baleària Ferries to Develop LNG Marine Engine

Gas Natural Fenosa and Spanish ferry operator Baleària plan to develop the first natural gas engine for passenger vessels in Spain. The project, pioneered in Spain, will allow the development and installation of auxiliary engines in the maritime domain in order to reduce emissions and improve air quality for both urban and port environments.气压表,过压防止型压力表,台湾0-10KPA压力表
The agreement is part of the collaboration of the two companies with the Port of Barcelona, the Generalitat de Catalunya and Barcelona City Council.
The CEO of Energy Retail Business for Gas Natural Fenosa (GNF), Daniel Lopez Jorda and Baleària president, Adolfo Utor, signed a partnership agreement 20th October to promote the development and installation of a natural gas engine and liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank in the ferry Abel Matutes, which operates daily on the Barcelona-Palma route. When completed, the companies will significantly reduce their emissions in the environment of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, and the port area of Palma de Mallorca.
Assumpta Ferran, director general of environmental quality of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Jordi Vila, responsible for environment of the port of Barcelona, and the Deputy Director general of prevention and Control of the pollution air of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Isabel Hernández i Cardona also participated of the ceremony.
The agreement also provides for the future development of infrastructure to deliver piped natural gas to the Port of Barcelona. This will allow a versatile system when the ship is moored: the natural gas engine will be able to operate using this connection to the distribution infrastructure, or through the LNG tank, located on the deck of the boat. On the other hand, the boat will also consume natural gas in manoeuvres of approach and exit for the production of electricity, replacing the usual fuel
Emissions Reduction
The application of this technology would result in emissions reduction and annual savings of around 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), 60 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and 6 tons of sulfur oxide (SOx). The agreement also involves an energy supply contract between the two companies.
“The agreement with Balearia means for Gas Natural Fenosa the possibility of developing a new technology and bet firmly on innovation, expanding our horizons, in this case in the field of port and marine. With this joint work we continue driving natural gas for an improvement in the quality of urban air in the surroundings of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, Barcelona port and the port of Palma”, explained Daniel López Jordà.
For his part President of Baleària, Adolfo Utor, stated that “it is a very important milestone, that will allow us to be pioneers in the use of gas in ferries and to be more sustainable”. Utor has reiterated the commitment of the shipping company on the use of gas and said that “in addition to reducing 40% of CO2 emissions, it also allows us to decrease fuel costs”.
Project Development
The plan is to start work in early 2015, to install a gas engine and position a 30 m3 LNG storage tank on deck 8 of the Abel Matutes. The tank will provide fuel autonomy for a week. The project also includes locating a gas processing plant on the same upper deck.
The new engine will be fully integrated in the power plant of the ship, will be able to work with any of the ancillaries, and will not have any visual impact. At the end of next year, testing and commissioning are expected to be underway.
The ferry, which has a length of 190 meters, has a capacity for 900 people and 2,235 linear feet of ro-ro cargo.
