Natural and Biogas Mobility and Infrastructure in the Baltic Sea Area
NGVA Europe’s 2nd regional Seminar L-CNG for Transport
Helsinki, Finland — March 17-18, 2015
NGVA Europe is bringing its collective expertise to Helsinki, giving participants the opportunity listen, discuss, learn, participate and meet with key representatives from the European Natural Gas transport industry, final users and delegates. Alternative fuels are urgently needed to break the over-dependence of oil for European transports, which today is 94%, of which 84% of the oil is being imported. The cost for that is close to 1 Billion Euros (USD 1.2 billion) per day, not including the increasing environmental cost.
The European Commission adopted its clean fuel strategy in 2013, to counter the huge environmental and economic cost, in part by guaranteeing the build up of a network of alternative fuel stations across Europe. This initiative resulted in the Directive on deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure, from November 2014. Finland has already started to fulfil its priorities, that’s why NGVA Europe has chosen Helsinki as the venue for this timely seminar.
From now on all European Member States have to develop their own National Policy Frameworks and present their plans for building CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) infrastructure before November 2016.
The ultimate goal is to achieve an appropriate coverage of CNG and LNG refuelling points to ensure EU-wide mobility with Natural Gas Vehicles in cities and densely populated areas by 2020 and for longer distances at least along the TEN-T core network by 2025 respectively.
