Worthington Industries celebrates their 8th major North American passenger-car program with the installation of the Worthington Type III CNG tank in 2014 bi-fuel Chevy Cruze vehicles. Impco Automotive, a subsidiary of Fuel Systems Solutions, Inc., chose the Worthington Type III CNG tank to provide more than 200 miles of natural gas range, while allowing for nearly 7 cubic feet of storage space.
”Worthington continues to partner with automotive OEM’s and aftermarket system integrators to support greater fuel economy,” said Wayne Powers, Director of Alternative Fuels & Composite Technology for Worthington Industries.
The new compressed natural gas-gasoline Chevrolet Cruze represents the “first EPA certification for a model year 2014 bi-fuel passenger sedan,” Impco said – and the only U.S. EPA-certified bi-fuel sedan for 2014 on the U.S. market.
Worthington’s Type III composite reinforced tank is lightweight, compact and delivers significant natural gas range – an 8.4 gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE) in the case of the bi-fuel CNG Cruze. These tanks, carbon fiber-on-aluminum liner construction, are tested to aviation grade standards and developed by the global experts in pressure vessel fabrication and technology.
The company has CNG tank production facilities in Europe, India and the United States.
