With its Stralis LNG (Liquified Natural Gas), Iveco has received the “Europäischen Transportpreis für Nachhaltigkeit”, a European transport award for sustainability. The decision was made by a top-level jury that included representatives from the transport industry, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), the media, research and German state institutions.
The award is aimed at encouraging companies from the transport and commercial vehicle industries to work in a sustainable manner and to help further solidify the principles of sustainable development. It recognizes that responsible and sustainable actions are fundamental to face environmental problems on a global scale, but that also to increase profitability and competitiveness for companies.
With LNG fuel, the up to 330 HP Stralis is not only extremely clean, it remains below Euro VI levels and it is also much quieter. This aspect makes it well-suited for inner-city uses such as early morning supermarket deliveries, but with its range of about 750 km, it can also be used for long-distance routes. Together, the vehicle’s use of high quality fuel, low consumption and the price of fuel make a very strong economic argument.
Stralis LNG also scores points on a macroeconomic level; in addition to its environmental compatibility, each kg of natural gas used for driving substitutes an equivalent amount of mineral oil and, therefore, tends to reduce pricing pressures.
The jury’s wholistic evaluation criteria also required sustainable practices in the production process and protection of environmental resources and the environment.
In vehicles using compressed natural gas (CNG) technology the methane is stocked in gas form in steel tanks at a pressure of 200 bars. In LNG vehicles, the liquefied natural gas is stored in liquid form at -125ºC, in cryogenic tanks, and is fed to the engine as natural gas in a gaseous state, after been heated in a heat exchanger.
